The first time I realized I was white was while watching Reading Rainbow as a six year old.  My best friend and I were folding clothes while LeVar Burton was talking us through a story about the Underground Railroad.  My best friend stopped what she was doing, looked at me, and said, “If we lived then, we couldn’t be friends because I’d be a slave and you’d own me,” before going back to folding laundry.  Thanks for the existential crisis, Mr. Burton.
