HIV infection cured in infant through very early treatment

shortformblog:

soupsoup:

A baby girl in Mississippi who was born with HIV has been cured after very early treatment with standard drug therapy, U.S. researchers reported on Sunday, in a potentially ground-breaking case that could offer insights on how to eradicate HIV infection in its youngest victims.

The child’s story is the first account of an infant achieving a so-called functional cure, a rare event in which a person achieves remission without the need for drugs and standard blood tests show no signs that the virus is making copies of itself.

Huge story that could potentially redefine the fight against AIDS.

did y’all know that until 2009 HIV+ people were not allowed to enter the United States?

Not entirely true fact…several of my friends adopted HIV+ kids from out of the country before 2009.

Knowledge is power.

Damn straight.

I’m not particularly a fan of circumcision in general, but I do want to point out that studies have suggested that it reduces heterosexual transmission of HIV and reduces a male’s risk of HIV infection by 60%, which has lead to organizations like WHO and UNAIDS to recommend circumcision as part of protecting oneself from HIV.  It’s voluntary, and the population I was involved with were teens and adults, so I’m not sure that that would include infants.

BIG PHOTOSETS FOREVER FOR THEY ARE MUCH HARDER TO IGNORE / a lot of these don’t have hi-res versions available, but i still want to post them

This was not an exaggeration. The government ignored the issue of HIV/AIDS for years before anything was done. Gay and Queer communities had to form their own clinics because no government agencies cared for them. Back then, being diagnosed was equivalent to a death sentence or extreme debt and poor quality of life/a significantly shortened lifespan.

Things got so desperate that people literally had “Die-Ins”— in contemporary usage this refers to masses of people simulating death in order to protest something (like the War in Iraq). In this case, however, fatally sick people would literally lie down in public places and protest with what little energy they had left until they died. There is some footage of a church Die-In in the documentary After Stonewall.  The middle image here of that person’s jacket is not an extreme political statement; it’s what people had to do because they had no other options.

edit: it’s After Stonewall, not Beyond Stonewall. Got confused with the film’s cousin, Before Stonewall

FDA approves at-home HIV test

gaywrites:

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the first over-the-counter HIV test in the nation.

OraQuick is an oral swab that gives results in about 20 minutes. It was recommended for approval by an independent panel in May and will be available at major retailers within a few months. From HIV Plus Magazine:

“This approval marks a major milestone in HIV testing,” executives at OraSure, the developers of the test, said in a statement Tuesday. “The OraQuick® In-Home HIV Test will fill an unmet need by providing a testing option for individuals at risk for HIV who may otherwise not test in a professional setting. For the first time ever, individuals will have access to an in-home oral test that will empower them to learn their HIV status and receive the care and support that they need.”

This is huge.
