saddest-summer:

A young Buddhist monk makes a face during the Dalai Lama’s prayer session at the Mahabodhi temple in Bodh Gaya.

This is one of my favorite photos that pops up on tumblr, perhaps because it so rarely does.  It so captures childhood to me.  Plus, I love that the photo was captured during prayer time.  It seems like religious communities—and I am painting with a broad brush, so please correct me if I’m totally off base anywhere—often do a disservice to the children (and the adults) among them by stifling them with expectations that take the joy out of their religious and/or spiritual experience.  One of the things I love best about my church service is the kids who come sit with me in the front row during worship (singing) time.  The littlest ones can’t read yet so they use the free space to dance, and they’re so free & unrestrained & un-self-conscious, and I think that’s such a lovely way to be before God…something that so many people seem to lose as they get older.
