Harry Potter was a long term boyfriend that you broke up with in July/August last year.
Hunger games was the rebound, so you try and convince yourself that the rebound was just as good as the long term boyfriend, but it really isn’t.
Twilight was the drunken one night stand that you prefer not to think about.

So I totally realized the main reason why I find the Hunger Games so much less brilliant than Harry Potter.  Both try to develop the theme of love as the means to defeat evil, but Harry Potter does a stronger job of it.  In Harry Potter, that love is primarily friendship, family, and the friends who become our family; romantic love is secondary (unless you ask the shippers, who are of the opinion that the novels should have been called Ron and Hermione and the Seven Freaking Books it Took for us to Finally Get Together).  The Hunger Games emphasizes the whole love triangle thing so much that the kind of love stories that I’d love to have seen better developed—Rue anyone, because District 11’s response to Katniss is so much more interesting than whether Katniss will pick Gale or Peeta—never really flourish.
